Michael Volker
Founder, Vancouver Angel Capital Network
Michael Volker, BASc('72), MASc('73), P.Eng., is a high-technology
entrepreneur involved in the development of technology-based businesses.
Currently, he is serving as the Director of Simon Fraser University's
Industry Liaison Office (since Dec'96). In 1966, as a student
entrepreneur, he was awarded the Junior Achievement
President-of-the-Year award. In 1973, he founded Volker-Craig Ltd., a
computer terminals company, and sold it in 1981. Since then he has been
active in various early stage businesses as a founder, investor,
director, and officer. He frequently lectures and speaks on management
and technology issues. He has served on various charitable and
educational boards and recently served as the Executive Director of the
BC Advanced Systems Institute (1988-1992), an organization dedicated to
technology development and technology transfer. From 1991-1996 he was
Chairman & CEO of RDM Corporation (formerly Mindflight Corporation), a
publicly-listed (Vancouver: RC) company he founded in 1987. He was
awarded the University of Waterloo Alumni Achievement Medal in
September, 1995. He serves on the Vancouver Stock Exchange's President's
Advisory Council as well as its Corporate Finance Committee and is
Chairman of the Vancouver Enterprise Forum. He is a director (or
advisor) of a number of B.C. technology ventures and is very active on
the B.C. high tech scene. Silicon Slopes Capital Corporation is a new
Venture Capital Pool company under Mike's chairmanship.
Education
BASc
(EE-1972), MASc (Systems Design-1973), University of Waterloo. He also
studied and lectured in the Faculty of Business, University of Kansas
(1974).
Experience
Technology business development, finance and management, especially in
Far East manufacturing and in International marketing and distribution.
Taught courses in engineering economics, design, and management at the
Universities of Waterloo, Toronto, Simon Fraser University and Kansas
University. In 1972, he co-founded and established a community radio
station, CKWR-FM, Kitchener. Involved in numerous business start-ups
with emphasis on financing and technology licensing.

Goals
To
create innovative mechanisms for funding and establishing new technology
ventures, especially early-stage spin-offs and start-ups. To help other
entrepreneurs create and build successful technology companies. To
promote and further the development of the technology industry in
British Columbia.
Personal
Canadian Citizen (1952), born November 15, 1948 in Germany. Married to
Janis and has 3 daughters and one son (Vanessa, Andrea, Lara, Tyler).
Favorite past-times are teaching and recreational activities including
tennis, running (with the Rainrunners fundraising team), sailing,
windsurfing, skiing, hiking, and motorcycling. Favorite thing about
Vancouver: dining out (especially at Whistler's Mongolie Grill).
Favorite place: Howe Sound.
